Laura Update

Just thought I would update everyone with school stuff. I was offered an extern position on a mother/baby unit at a local hospital. It’s for the summer, and I get to work directly with a nurse doing nurse stuff! I’m very excited about this little adventure. I hope that this will be a foot in the door to a hospital so that I can possible have a job when I graduate. My goal is to work with women and children when I graduate, and this will be the test to see if the dream works with reality. I officially graduate in May of 2014, and it’s nice to see the light looking a little brighter at the end of the tunnel. I’m lucky enough that I will also be going to school this summer, and I have maternity nursing classes going on the same time as my externship. I should do really well in that class because I will be working with it on a regular basis.

Update:

I completed my externship, and the CNO (Chief Nursing Officer) is looking at extending it for a year long position. This summer was full of babies galore! I was in over 100 deliveries, and it is one of the best experiences I’ve had in nursing school. This summer had the “Super Moon”, and I swear we couldn’t get people out of delivery rooms quick enough for the next mom. There is this theory that when we have a full moon, it makes women go into labor along with bringing out the crazies! The medical field is really fascinating, and I have not had a dull day. I learned a new term this summer- “Drive By”. No it’s not a shooting, it’s when a mom walks in and we’re lucky to get her on a bed before that baby is out. I’ve also been in deliveries in the back of a taxi, and I will never ride in a taxi ever after this!  I was offered to come back on my unit to complete a year long externship. I also did a preceptorship this fall on the same unit because they asked my school to have me back! I feel very lucky to have my dream work so well with reality. This has been such a wonderful experience, and I am anxious to start looking for the job I will have after graduation. Only 4 more classes to go!
