We went with the Johnsons this weekend to the zoo to celebrate their daughter’s second birthday. The weather seemed to be on our side, and we were hot but overcast. This is typical Georgia weather for this time of year making you contemplate the air conditioning only to shoot yourself down with the thought of “It’s only the beginning of May!”. After being at the zoo for around 10 minutes, Lilly decided to drench herself and the stroller seat in her water. So, we had an unhappy and half naked baby for the rest of the zoo! We started off a little scary with no animals being in their exhibits, and then we started to see some animals. Lilly was first fascinated with the meerkats because one of them kept running around in circles, and to Lilly this was entertainment. I thought that she would enjoy the monkeys too because she likes to watch Curious George, but I was wrong! She could have cared less about what they were doing because they weren’t moving around like the television show! We also got to watch some creature that looked like a cross between a monkey and a raccoon. I have no idea what they were called, and Lilly loved this part! She was screaming with excitement at them because they were swinging around and chasing each other.
However, as much fun as she had there were so many people with strollers crammed into this tiny place it made moving around almost impossible! Paul gave up along with Joe and went outside to escape the madness! We also had strollers making us just a guilty of blocking traffic, and I think that’s why they just gave up to go outside! We got to see the pandas, and Lilly liked to watch the one eat and eat. Of course we went into the reptile house which ended up being a nice little break. It had air going, and although Paul hates snakes he enjoyed the air! This place too started to fill up with the strollers, and we left to see the rest of the zoo. We got to see the orangutang exhibit, and they were doing some sort of study on them. They had a little flat screen that they would touch for some sort of matching game, and the reward was food. It was really interesting to watch them work, and then they had one little guy who sat away from them looking like he was sulking! It’s amazing see how much they were like human along with the gorillas!!! I was surprised to see that the zoo was so big! We finished looking at all the animals, and we enjoyed a nice little picnic at the park outside. Lilly got to stretch out with a little freedom, and it was nice for all the adults to just rest! Lilly passed out on the way home making our drive nice and quiet! I think she had fun, and we decided the next time we go she will be old enough to walk and ask about the animals ( I think that gives us about 5 years!)! Here are a few photos of the trip!

HA! Love the passed out baby picture. The animal you were mentioning are called “Lemers”, good ole useless knowledge at work. Hope my comment finds the Malone family all doing well and enjoying the beginning of summer as well!

Though it was a nice change from tooling around the house or working on a project the Atlanta Zoo in May is both hot and extremely busy. The first 2 or 3 animal exhibits we passed were unoccupied. Matter of fact, for the first 15 minutes or so the only animals we saw were a few squirrels. Eventually, we did get to see most of the animals, but I don’t think Lilly was to impressed with any of them except for the monkeys and birds in one of the open air exhibits where the monkeys were only feet away and the birds kept swooping over your head. One thing I wasn’t expecting was to see the orangutang in the first picture using a computer to get food. That’s something my dad hasn’t quite figured out yet. I believe they were conducting some type of research that required the orangutang to press buttons on the screen to get food. I’m pretty sure my dad would have starved.
